The Bill Lumley Rapidplay finals took place on Wednesday evening (10th March ) at West Bretton. Although Wakefield Chess Club did not have a team entered in this competition, we did have a lot of members who took part playing for other teams.
The winners of this year’s Bill Lumley Rapidplay are Netherton A
This winning team consisted of Peter Shaw, Nick Edwards, Craig Thompson, Alan Holloway, Johnathan Morton and MIke Wilford. Peter is a club member of course, but is a regular member of the Netherton team in the evening league. However, Craig Thompson, Alan Holloway and Mike Wilford are club members who normally play for Wakefield in the evening league.

Club members of the winning team are shown above. (from left to right) Peter Shaw, Craig Thompson, Alan Holloway and Mike Wilford
Coming joint second with Calderdale just a single point behind the winners were West Bretton who are in a large part also made up of club members. This team consisted of Barry Marshall, Granville Boot, Dave Toulson, Barry Brian, Gerry Thickett and Harris Vaughan.
It is worth noting that Junior member Harris Vaughan scored an impressive 2.5 points out of a possible 3 on the evening which contributed in no small measure to West Bretton’s silver medal position. I’m sure West Bretton Captain, Roger Tuddenham would have been impressed with this performance.

There are some excellent photos of both the event and the winning team on the HDCA web site which can be seen here.

Early Start

Please note that the Bill Lumley Rapidplay Finals which are scheduled to take place at West Bretton on Wednesday evening the 10th of March start at 7.15 pm. This is 15 mins. earlier than the normal start time for evening league matches.

The latest team news on the next round of the AG Sunderland Cup which is scheduled to take place on Sunday the 21st of February has been published on the Junior News page.
Wakefield Juniors are the current holders of this trophy.
-----

There were at least two events this weekend in which Wakefield Chess Club members participated and both with success!
Firstly, Wakefield Junior Adarsh Vani was invited to play in the Under 10 closed English Championships at Yately Manor School in Hampshire. This is a very strong event run by the National Junior Chess Squad in which entry is by invitation only. Adarsh came third with a score of 4 points out of 6. With only one loss in this event and that to the winner, only after three and a half hours of a close struggle, I’m sure I can speak on behalf of all Club members in saying Congratulations! to Adarsh and that we hope this is the first of many successes.
Secondly, the 2010 Jorvik Rapidplay took place on Saturday, the 30th of January at the Wheatlands Hotel in York. Out of 46 players from around the region, Peter Shaw was in top form and came equal first with a score of 5 points out of 6.

-----

After the third Yorkshire Junior Chess Association ( YJCA ) Grand Prix event of the season, which was held at the Wakefield Girls’ High School, on the 24th of January, it seems fitting that a Wakefield Junior member is in current lead of one of the sections.
In 22nd place out of 109 entrants David Brown is leading the Under 8 section of the YJCA Grand Prix.
Please see the Junior News and Events page for more details of this splendid achievement ( and a larger photo of David ) and for details of the next YJCA event which is scheduled to take place on Sunday the 7th of February.
-----
Just a reminder that the 2010 Yorvik Rapidplay takes place this Saturday at the Wheatlands Lodge Hotel in York, please see events page for details
-----
Games start tomorrow (Saturday the 16th of January) in one of the World’s strongest chess tournaments - Chorus Chess 2010 held at Wijk aan Zee in Holland. World Champion Viswanathan Anand and World number one Magnus Carlsen are among the participants in Group A. 16 year old Wesley So of the Philippines is in the B Group. The official site can be found here

As far as I can gather, Peter Shaw was Wakefield Chess Club’s sole representative at the 23rd York Chess Congress which took place over the weekend.
Peter started off well after a first round draw against Raymond Wynarczyk of Northumberland, by winning both the 2nd and 3rd round games against Tony Slinger and Richard Allis respectively. This gave Peter a score of 2.5 points out of a possible 3 going into the last two rounds on Sunday. Unfortunately Peter lost to congress veteran Mike Surtees in round four and also lost his last round game against Alex Combie of Newark.
Charles Storey won the Open with 5 straight victories, Chris Ross came second with 4. A group of six players finished equal 3rd with 3.5 points which included Mike Surtees, Alex Combie and rising star Jean-Luc Weller of York.

We have a club member who has an ECF grade of 200+! Peter Shaw jumped from 194 to 201 ECF grade on the new January ECF Rapidplay list which was published today (11th of January). Both Kiruthika Rajeswaren and Amol Vani have also increased their grades to 138 and 130 respectively. Wakefield A team Captain Chris Tinker has jumped straight into the chart with a 138 grade. All these new grades have been added to the Members page on the left.
-----

Important! please note that all this week’s matches in the Huddersfield Evening League have been postponed due to adverse weather conditions. The fixtures have been rearranged to take place on the 17th of February.
-----
One junior member of Wakefield Chess Club was successful this Saturday gone. Playing on board 4 with the white pieces for Leeds Juniors A against Stephen Priest of Calderdale C. Amol Vani was one of the three game victors for Leeds Juniors. Stephen Priest is rated at 126 on the new YCA gradings list so Amol gains a 176 rating for this fine result! Unfortunately, Leeds Juniors lost this close match by the score of 4.5 points - 3.5 points. Congratulations Amol!

The Wakefield Junior Chess Congress 2010 which is also third event of the YCA Junior Grand Prix is scheduled to be held at Wakefield Girls’ High School on Sunday the 24th of January. Please see events page for details and entry form.
-----

Wakefield B team were not in action this weekend (2nd of January). This turned out to be fortunate in that three regular Wakefield A team players were unavailable for the home match against IM Brown title favourites Calderdale A. Craig Thompson, Alan Holloway and Jim Whittaker thus kindly stepped into the deep end of the IM Brown.
To see how we fared in this match please see the Wakefield A team page in the Club Teams page to the left. You can also view the top board encounter between Peter Shaw and Bob Newton which had the dazzling display of checkmate with a knight and bishop in 30 seconds (on the winner’s clock whose flag fell 11 seconds later!)

The British Rapidplay Championships 2009 which took place in Halifax, finished this evening. Peter Shaw started the last round with the White pieces and a score of 6 points out of 10 against Fide Master Alexi Slavin graded 235 on 6.5 points.
Peter had the initiative both on the board and on the clock for most of the game. The game ended in a draw and left Peter on the fine score of 6.5 points level with such players as GM Summerscale (with whom he also drew!) and one half point behind GM Gordon.
Peter’s final game was broadcast live on the official web site and for those of you, who, like me, missed watching it live you can see it here
The joint winners of the tournament are GMs David Howell and Mark Hebden each with a score of 9 points. Third place went to GM Peter Wells with a score of 8.5 points and fourth place went to York RI A board 1 IM Richard Palliser.

The photo above shows Peter (left) accepting the resignation of GM Keith Arkell at last year’s British Rapidplay Championships.

In the HDCA Evening League Watkinson Trophy, on Monday evening (16th of November), our heavily outgraded Wakefield team managed to draw against the once mighty Netherton 1 team who have won the Watkinson Trophy on numerous occasions in the not too distant past. The match details can be seen here.
-----
Wakefield A played host to Calderdale B in the IM Brown on Saturday the 14th of November, whilst Wakefield B travelled to The Railway Institute in York to become guests of York RI D in the Silver Rook. Wakefield B lost in York, which was understandable seeing as the Captain was playing for Wakefield A, who remain undefeated as yet this season with a comfortable win over Calderdale C.
-----
The 47th Hull Chess Congress took place on the 6th to 8th of November. Wakefield number 1 chess player, Peter Shaw came 3rd equal in the Open section with a fine score of 3 points out of 5. The winner of the Open was Fide Master Charlie Storey (who coaches the England Under 16 team) with a perfect score of 5 points. Mike Surtees from Bolton came in 2nd place with a score of 3.5 out of 5.

Wakefield Juniors were not only well represented at the 1st YCA Junior Grand Prix event of the season, held at Wigginton Primary School in York this Saturday gone but did the Club proud by winning many prizes. For a report see the Junior News in Mr D’s new Wakefield Junior Section.
-----
The National Youth Chess Association Championships took place in Telford on Saturday. Club members Amol and Adarsh Vani played for the Yorkshire Under 14 team. I do not have the result for this section yet but we can congratulate the Yorkshire Under 18 team who took the National Title at this event.

How did Wakefield B get on in their first match of the season? See our B team page on the left in Club Teams to find out!
-----
The games viewed on this web site can now be viewed from either side of the board ( by clicking on the black and white triangles under the g column) and on suitable screens and browsers the board should appear larger.

Top Yorkshire International Master Richard Palliser who performed so well at this year’s British Championships in Torquay last month is giving a simultaneous chess exhibition in which he will play 30 opponents at the same time! News article can be viewed here. I understand that there may be some places still available and that there are also prizes to be won. This event is also FREE! Wakefield Chess Club was represented at the 2009 Bradford Chess Congress over the weekend by Bien Cuaresma and Peter Shaw. Bien took part in the Major section and scored 2 points. Peter took part in the Open section and scored 3 points. This result included a loss against one of Britain’s leading Grandmasters, Stephen Gordon, who won the section with a hundred percent score of 5 points. All the results can be seen on the Bradford Chess web site here along with some nice photos.

The photos show Peter on the right receiving the HDCA Individual KO Trophy and Bienvenido on the left during a Woodhouse Cup match against Hull.

I have been informed by the Club Secretary that Sheffield C has pulled out of the YCA League IM Brown Division. This means that the Wakefield A team’s first fixture of the season which was due to take place on Saturday the 26th September has been cancelled.

I missed Peter's progress in the British Championships this year, the 3rd time Peter has qualified and participated in this prestigious and historical chess event. It was also his most successful to date with a fine performance and a score of 6 points out of 11.
In an effort to try and go some way towards making up for this omission Peter's 9th round game against International Master and Women Grandmaster Susan Lalic who is currently graded at 2310 is given here.
Peter Shaw also managed to play in the Bob Burn's Summer Tournament as well as The British Championships (see column left). With a last round victory against Mike Walker, Peter finished in 1st place with a score of 4.5 out of 5, only a fourth round bye robbed Peter of a maximum 5! Results can be seen on the BDCA website here.

Wakefield Chess Club's first league match of the season is scheduled to take place on Monday the 14th of September. It is a home match versus David Brown's in the Huddersfield Evening League Examiner Handicap section.
-----
The new 2009 Chess season has already started for Wakefield Chess Club.
On Monday the 27th of July Wakefield set out to defend the Sherwood Shield against Netherton. This tournament was started in 1994 and is limited to players who are graded 130 or under (according to the new grades). The 2008 match was won by Wakefield. This was no mean feat as Netherton had won the Sherwood Shield every year from its start in 1994 until then. A report on this fine achievement was written by the team Captain Mark Shelmerdine and published as the first item in last season's News page which can be seen here.
This meant, of course, that Netherton were more determined than ever to win this year and claim back what they had viewed as their own property. And of course Wakefield were also determined to prove that last year's victory was no fluke flash in the pan.
The teams were evenly matched but as you can see from the match details below, it was Netherton who emerged victorious and regained the Sherwood Shield.
