The new ECF grades are out and they can be seen on the Club Member’s page. Peters standard play is graded 199 - just one point short of that elusive 200 figure! The highest jump in grading over last year was achieved by Dave Toulson who leapt eleven points to 157!

A new award was announced at this year’s AGM. This is The Junior of the Year Medal. Which is to be presented to a junior member who has shown outstanding qualities. The medal was awarded this year to Vivi Way in recognition of her regular attendance at the club and good overall progress.

Vivi is shown above playing for Wakefield Juniors in last seasons AG Sunderland Cup, in which she also contributed to the team victory.

The new Club Secretary, Ian Johnson has kindly provided the minutes of the 174th Annual General meeting of the Wakefield Chess Club, which have now been published and can be seen here
We can see from these minutes that we have a new Club Secretary, Ian Johnson, who replaces Mike Denison. Mike agreed to cover as Club Secretary temporarily ‘ for a couple of weeks’ when the previous one had to step down suddenly - this was thirty years ago! May I add my name to the list of people who have thanked Mike for all his hard work over the years in the post. I am glad to see that he is not retiring all together and I wish him all the best in his continuance to further Junior Chess at the Club.

The above photo shows Mike receiving the winning trophy for winning the first round of the YCA AG Sunderland Cup which Wakefield Juniors also went on to win last year.
The photo below shows our new Club Secretary Ian Johnson on the right playing Barry Brian our Club Treasurer

We also have a new Club President, Mike Wilford who takes over from Mark Shelmerdine who stepped down after three years.

With Ian Johnson becoming our new Club Secretary, the new Competitions Secretary is Peter Shaw and I’m sure we can look forward to some exciting tournaments at the Club in the near future.
