I hope you have been able to follow along as we have, in watching the progress (and playing through the games) of Amol and Adarsh Vani who have been representing not only Wakefield Chess Club, but England, in these Championships.

The ninth and final round took place yesterday and both Amol and Adarsh managed to add to their points total.

Amol took the full point with a victory over Kayla Lennartsson of Sweden while Adarsh scored a half point with a draw against Anna Vrtiakova of Slovakia.

Game 20:   Petra Kejzar v Amol Vani 8th EU Youth Chess Championships Mureck, Austria 10th of August 2010

Adarsh also bounced back to form in the eight round with a very exciting miniature which was full of tactical fireworks. In a very tactical encounter he emerged vicdtorious against some very bold play by Margareth Olde of Estonia.

Adarsh missed some more winning chances in the fifth round of the U10 section of the 8thEU Youth Chess Championships in Mureck, Austria on Sunday and drew again. In yesterday’s sixth round, however Adarsh notched up another win, this time against Spanish junior Miraya  Represa Perez

Game 19:   Adarsh Vani v Miraya Reresa Perez 8th EU Youth Chess Championships  Mureck, Austria 9th of August 2010

In yesterday’s fourth round of the 8th EU Youth Chess Championships at Mureck, Austria,  Amol and Adarsh had mixed fortunes. Amol lost to the Austrian Junior Laura Hiebler, whilst Adarsh missed a number of opportunities to win his game against the Slovenian Junior Jaka Meglic and settled for a draw.

Game 17:   Jaka Meglic v Adarsh Vani   8th EU Youth Chess Championships Mureck, Austria, 7th of August 2010

For today’s fifth round Amol has the Black pieces against Slovenian Junior Barbara Skuhala and Adarsh has the White pieces against Spanish Junior Pol Bover De La Cruz

The third round of the 8th EU Youth Chess Championships took place yesterday in Mureck, Austria. In the Under 14 section, Amol was paired against the Italian Junior Alexander Teutsch, graded 1779, and who is seeded 17 places above Amol.

In the U10 section Adarsh was paired against the Spanish Junior and number one seed Mulet Inigo Lopez, graded 1830! after drawing with the number three seed yesterday  (see game below).

Understandably this time both lost.

For today’s fourth round, Adarsh is paired against Slovenian Junior Jaka Meglic who has drawn all his games so far; and Amol is paired against Austrian Junior Laura Hiebler.

Earlier in the season Club member Adarsh Vani qualified to play in the England Under 11 trials in Liverpool along with the best players from across the country. Adarsh scored a fine 2.5 points out of 6. Although this score was not enough to qualify for the current England squad Adarsh was still under 10 and so will have another opportunity next year.

Qualifying for the trials at this age though was a fine achievement in itself. Congratulations Adarsh.

Also at the North Yorkshire Megafinal Adarsh won the Boys Under 10 title!

Not to be outdone by his younger brother Amol Vani also qualified for the National Gigafinal to be held this month.

It should also be noted also that the leaders have played in all three events and the points are accumulative.  Wakefield Junior Adarsh Vani who is in the Under 11 section,  for instance, did not play at the Hull event and thus has only two scores to carry forward. Adarsh’s average score over the two events is 83, whereas the current leader in the Under 11 section has an event average of 74.

The next event in the YJCA Grand Prix is scheduled to take place on Sunday the 7th of February. The 2010 Leeds Junior Congress is set to take place at The Grammar School at Leeds, Alwoodley Gates, Harrogate Road, Leeds LS17 8GS. An entry form can be found here

In the recent Huddersfield Evening League Watkinson Trophy match against West Bretton, two of Wakefield’s junior members were in action.

Harris Vaughan played for West Bretton and gained a fine draw against our Examiner Captain Mike Wilford. This was a good result for Harris and I am sure he will have more success during 2010.

Harris2a

The other junior member was Amol Vani who was matched against the experienced West Bretton  player and Wakefield Chess Club Treasurer  Barry Brian. A draw would have been a good result for Amol against Barry who is higher graded. Amol was not satisfied with a draw on this occasion and duly won this game. This was a great result which demonstrates the rapid improvement which Amol is making.

Junior Club member Adarsh Vani was playing for Leeds Juniors A this Saturday in the Yorkshire Chess Association Silver Rook match against our own B team. Leeds Juniors A won the match with Adarsh recording a fine draw against our Examiner Evening League Captain Mike Wilford on board 5. Also Francesca Fozard who was a member of our succesful AG Sunderland Cup winning team along with Adarsh, and who recently was a main prize winner at the 2009 Scarborough Chess Congress got a fine draw with the experienced and wiley Alan Holloway on board 2.

Most of you Juniors will probably remember this venue as the scene of  Wakefield Juniors’ first victory on the way to winning the Yorkshire Chess Association AG Sunderland Cup. Just to remind you, the photo below was taken last season at the conclusion of the first round of the AG Sunderland Cup at Wigginton Primary School in York.

The photo above shows our victorious Wakefield Juniors team showing the winner’s medals and Mr D holding aloft the team Trophy. Why, I wonder is Mr Peter Cloudsdale, the YCA President (right back row) is looking so happy?

That must be why! The photo below shows that he survived this attack from Headteacher Mrs Boyle.
